Infosys Terminates Around 400 Trainees Over Failed Assessments: A Closer Look at the IT Layoff Clause

The mass layoffs took place at the company’s Mysore campus on February 7, leaving several employees emotional as they were instructed to vacate the premises immediately.

The Layoff Controversy: Trainees Speak Out

These trainees, who had been eagerly waiting for two and a half years to join one of India’s leading IT companies, received their offer letters in 2022. However, despite their patience and hopes, they were asked to leave without warning.

A terminated trainee shared their emotional distress with MoneyControl, expressing frustration over the IT layoff clause in their contract. According to the trainee, this clause is a form of cruelty, as many employees fear speaking out about the unfair nature of such abrupt terminations.

“This is cruelty, it is a big company, and trainees fear speaking the truth,” said the trainee, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Infosys Explains Its Actions: A 20-Year-Old Policy

In response to the termination reports, Infosys defended its decision, explaining that the company’s policy allows all new employees three opportunities to pass the internal assessments. Failure to clear the assessments results in termination, which is part of their contractual agreement. This policy, Infosys stated, has been in place for over 20 years.

The company clarified that the layoffs were carried out in an organized manner, with groups of 50 trainees being summoned at a time to hand over their laptops and vacate the premises. Security staff and bouncers were reportedly present during the process.

Emotional Scenes at the Mysore Campus

One particularly emotional scene unfolded when a female trainee from Madhya Pradesh tearfully requested to stay the night, pleading, “Please let me stay the night. I will leave tomorrow. Where will I go right now?” However, company officials reportedly responded, saying, “We don’t know. You are no longer part of the company. Vacate the premises by 6 pm.”

The Third Assessment: A New Batch Faces Increased Scrutiny

The situation at Infosys is likely to escalate as another batch of 450 trainees from the October 2021 group are set to undergo their third assessment on February 14, sources revealed. The heightened scrutiny around these assessments has raised concerns, as the passing percentage for these tests has reportedly increased from 50% to 65%.

Training Curriculum: Increased Workload and Study Hours

In addition to stricter assessment criteria, the training curriculum has also undergone significant changes. Trainees are now required to complete 200 hours of study, with an additional 8 hours of self-study each day. Critics argue that this added pressure is contributing to the rising layoffs and dissatisfaction among employees.
